<div class="entry-content"> A Polish national was killed and five other people, including the pilot, were injured when a light aircraft they were flying in on a tour over Lake Naivasha crashed on Thursday, police said.<br /> The light aeroplane was flying across the lake, some 104 km (65 miles) northwest of the capital Nairobi, when the accident occurred at around midday, Reuters reported.<br /> Civil aviation authority investigators were trying to establish the causes of the crash.<br /> Apart from the dead person, who was a woman, the other occupants were the Kenyan pilot and four passengers from Britain.<br /> </div>

Court remands Police Inspector for killing ‘okada’ rider

A Magistrate Court sitting in Oke Eda, Akure, Ondo State on Friday ordered for the remand of a police inspector, Anthony Nwadike in prison custody for allegedly killing an motorcycle rider in Omifon in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.<br /> Sources said the deceased, Sunday Joseph and two other persons were shot by the alleged killer cop during an argument.<br /> They were said to be on the motorcycle and met the accused person and some other police men at a police check-point. <br /> It was learnt that accused threw a big stick to the deceased on the motorcycle to stop him, making the deceased and his passengers to fall down.<br /> Consequently, it was learnt that an argument ensued between the deceased and the policemen.<br /><br />This reportedly led to the shooting of the three people by the cop .<br /> The deceased was said to have died on the spot while the two other victims were still in critical condition at the hospital.<br /> The accused person however pleaded not guilty to the offence but his plea was not taken. <br /> In his ruling, Magistrate; V. Bob-Manuel ordered that the accused person should be remanded in Olokuta Prison and adjourned the case till October 12. <br />

Ex-soldier, pastor, arraigned for fraud

A 90 year-old retired Soldier, Chief Damian Onwu was on Friday arraigned by a chief magistrate court in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.<br /> Onwu and two others allegedly forged the signatures of their dead fathers, who were Elders of Ezekiel Hart family of Grand Bonny Kingdom, in Bonny Local Government Area (LGA) of the state to sell portions of their family land located at Ikom Ikom, in Oyigbo LGA of same state to unsuspecting members of the public.<br /> The charge was brought against them by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, through the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone six, Calabar in Cross Rivers state.<br /> The Soldier who retired 30 years ago was charged with a Pastor, Israel Zacchaeus Ezekiel Hart (50), and Fubara Zacchaeus Ezekiel Hart (48).<br /> They were charged with conspiracy, forgery, impersonation, extortion and fraud.<br /><br /><br />They however pleaded not guilty to all the counts and were granted bail in the sum of N4 million, by a chief magistrate court in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.<br /> A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), attached to zone 6, Calabar, Iroka Onwunta prosecuted the matter.<br /> Presenting the charge before the court, Onwunta alleged that the accused persons conspired among themselves and forged the signatures of the deceased elders of Ezekiel-Hart family of Grand Bonny, in Bonny Local Government Area (LGA), of Rivers state, their fathers, with the intent to defraud unsuspecting members of the society.<br /> He said the offence was committed between 1992 and 1994 at Ezekiel-Hart family, Grand Bonny Kingdom’s parcels of land at IKom IKom in Oyigbo LGA of the state.<br /> According to the charge sheet obtained from the court, the accused persons, allegedly forged and signed the signatures of Chief Benoni Ezekiel-Hart, Zacheaus Ezekiel Hart and Chief George Ezekiel-Hart who died in 1975, 1990 and 1995, respectively to sell portions of the family land at Kom Kom, Oyigbo.<br /> The prosecution also said that the action of the trio amount to impersonation, with which they defrauded innocent Nigerians different amounts of money, ranging between N100,000 and N350,000 and thereby committed offence punishable under sections, 70(1), 467(2), 516(A), 484, and 419 of the criminal code cap 39, volume 11 of the Laws of Rivers state, 1999.<br /> The trio pleaded not guilty to the six count charge levelled against them and the magistrate, A. O. Amadi-Nna granted them bail in the sum of N4 million with one surety in like sum.<br />

The son of the Dean of Graduate School of the University of Calabar, Onyebuchi Okwueze, has reportedly been abducted from the staff quarters of the institution by unknown gunmen.<br /> Okwueze, a 24-year old first year student of the department of Banking and Finance was abducted on Wednesday.<br /> A statement by the Information Officer of the school, Mr Effiong Eyo, made available to our reporter in Calabar read, “Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers yesterday (Wednesday) stormed the premises of the Dean, Professor Emeka Okwueze who was unavailable at the time of the attack, broke into his house and made away with his Plasma television and his 24 year old son who was the only one at home.<br /> “The gunmen who were said to have begun their operation at about 8.15pm also inflicted injuries on a lecturer in Physics department, Dr. Anthony George and his wife who were driving in and got caught up in the attack. While Dr. George was shot on his right hand, his wife sustained bullet injuries on the left knee. Both are however responding to treatment.<br /> “Though they made unsuccessful attempts to gain entrance into the stretch of houses accommodating staff within the wing of buildings, the gunmen however smashed the mirror and front tyre of a Mercedes Benz vehicle belonging to a Professor in the College of Medical Sciences, Prof Chucks Ejezie.<br /><br />“It will be recalled that in the month of May this year, kidnappers invaded the same wing of buildings and took away with them the son of a Deputy Registrar, Barr Ekpenyong Iniama and the wife and daughter of Prof Wilfred Ndifon of the College of Medical Sciences, both were later released.<br /> “In a bid to checkmate future occurrence of the event, the Deputy Chief Security Officer of the Institution, DSP Jarlath Abang disclosed that several security measures were put in place by the management of the institution in conjunction with the Cross River State Government.<br /> “The measures covered and implemented in the joint initiative include among others , demolition of all shanties at the waterfront by the Cross River State Government,  prohibition of fishing and farming at the water front, displacement of illegal occupants and constant patrol of the quarters both by security operatives on foot and vehicles.<br /> “The Deputy Chief Security Officer attributed the delay in the distress call as a major reason for the kidnappers’ tentative gain.<br /> “The Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof Zana Akpagu visited the homes of the Staff who were affected by the attack and commiserated with them over the unfortunate event and assured them of management concern over their welfare and pledged to do all within the purview of his office to ensure the release of those kidnapped and also catch up with the kidnappers.<br /> “He also promised to work with the relevant security agencies to ensure continued safety of lives and properties on campus.”<br />

Edo poll: PDP’s allegation is idiotic – APC

The All Progressive Congress in Edo State has described as idiotic, allegations by the People’s Democratic Party, that it masterminded the postponement of the state governorship election to September 28.<br /> It said the postponement of the election did not add any value to activities of the party in preparation for the polls.<br /> State Chairman of the APC, Anselm Ojezua, who spoke at a press briefing on Friday, said the decision to postpone the election has adversely affected the party.<br /> Ojezua stated that the APC and some other critical stakeholders were not consulted before the shift in the date for the election was announced.<br /> He noted that the APC has effectively campaigned and marketed its candidate, Godwin Obaseki to the electorate as well as mobilized its members ahead of the election.<br /><br />The APC chairman said the party had previously drawn attention to the influx of militants into the state from neighboring states during the Continuous Voters Registration exercise even though the party does not have details from the security agencies.<br /> Ojezua expressed optimism that the postponement would provide an opportunity for security agencies to address the influx of militants in addition to other threats that may have been discovered.<br /> His words, “Elections have largely been peaceful in Edo State since 2007 until the sudden interest of the Governors of Rivers State and Delta State who are hell bent on realizing the long standing obsession of an individual to rule this State by all means.<br /> “We believe that the timing and mode of communication by the security agencies could have been better handled having regards to the very hard work and huge resources deployed towards the election by all concerned.<br /> “However, having regards to the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral act, we are obliged to defer to the decision of INEC particularly when ”security threats” have been cited as the reason for the postponement.<br />“All these, taken with the reported threat by the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Nwike to the effect that the APC people should go and write their will should be a source of concern to any right thinking person. You recall that the last time the same man issued the same threat in Port Harcourt several people lost their lives including Youth Corpers who had been deployed to assist in the exercise in that State.” <br />

<div class="entry-content"> The Lagos State Government has made adequate preparations to ensure a hitch free celebration of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir, disclosing that security personnel have been mobilized to be at strategic places.<br /> While briefing Government House Correspondents at the end of the monthly Security Council meeting, the State’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni said the Council appraised the security strategies already put in place for the celebration and members were satisfied with the solid arrangement towards a successful celebration.<br /> According to Owoseni, “We looked at all the strategies that have been put in place by all the security agencies and the support that the State Government is giving us and we are satisfied that we are well prepared to ensure that residents of Lagos have hitch-free holiday period and that the Muslim brothers and sisters also have a successful and hitch-free Eid-el-Kabir holiday.<br /> “Security agencies will be at all the strategic places including the Eid-el-Kabir praying ground, amusement parks and the malls so that by the time we are ending the holiday and the Sallah is finished, everybody will be happy to say that it is another successful holiday and it is another successful Eid-el-Kabir celebration.”<br /> </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://thenationonlineng.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/INEC-Mahmud.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://thenationonlineng.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/INEC-Mahmud.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><span id="goog_1142426159"></span><span id="goog_1142426160"></span><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chair Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu yesterday convened a stakeholders’ meeting in Benin, the Edo State capital, after receiving the security advice that Saturday’s governorship election should be shifted.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Leaders of political parties, civil society and traditional rulers attended the meeting, which sparked a huge debate and suspense.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Yakubu told the impromptu gathering that the call for postponement had nothing to with the preparation for the election. He said INEC was ready for a successful poll.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">He is to meet with security agencies for more details about the threat and how it could affect the election.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">A decision will be taken today on whether the election will go on or not, Yakubu said, adding that the independence of INEC is guaranteed.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Before the meeting with stakeholders in Benin, party agents were already stationed at the CBN office to escort and monitor the transportation of sensitive materials but they were recalled.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Prof. Yakubu said: “INEC is fully prepared and mobilised for the election. The preparation started six months ago. We have mobilized, we have recruited, we have trained and we have deployed personnel. After today’s meeting, the news broke about security threat. We agreed to take delivery of the sensitive materials from the CBN to our office for further distribution to the local governments. We have fully implemented all activities in preparation for the election.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“If we proceed, it means getting the sensitive materials from the CBN and once the materials leave the CBN, we consider them exposed. We have the result sheets and ballot papers customised local government by local government. It took time for the materials to be delivered. Shall we proceed or leave matters as they are until further clarification with security agencies?</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">“The independence of INEC will be protected. This is the only body empowered to set a date for election. INEC will do all to protect Nigeria’s democracy. We need to consult with those that gave the advice. They are not in Benin. INEC will take a decision as soon as possible.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;">A statement by Yakubu’s spokesman Rotimi Oyekanmi said: “We have just met again with the stakeholders where various pieces of advice were given by them.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“INEC then decided that it would be necessary for it to consult with both the DSS and the police that issued a statement earlier today (yesterday), to find out what informed their decision to issue that statement.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“Thereafter, INEC will take a decision that will be communicated to all Nigerians. However, the commission wishes to assure all Nigerians that its independence will not be compromised.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The likelihood of a shift set the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on a collision course.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole said his party is “over prepared” for the election.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The APC  candidate is Godwin Obaseki.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">He appealed to INEC not to postpone the “final burial of the PDP for too long”.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">He added: “The APC is ready for the election this Saturday and that was why we held our mega rally on Tuesday and after that rally our people across the state became more committed, more dogged and ready for the election.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“I am already preparing to go to my village to also mobilise my people as other party leaders are doing, that is to let you know that we are not relaxing despite the fact that we know the PDP is already dead and our people are just getting ready for the burial.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">“However, security issues are security issues and as regards elections they are very critical. If on their own they are calling on INEC for postponement, I am sure they must have their reasons because they are experts in it. If you recall, we raised the alarm that the PDP had planned to import thugs from neighbouring states to help them unleash mayhem on our people because they are not prepared for the election.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“They have not been campaigning because they have no message, rather, they imported thugs into the state but I wish the election will go on so that security agents will pick them up and expose them. So, if security agents are raising this same alarm, I will not be surprised. I am aware some of my colleagues in the Southsouth threatened that they will deal with me in Edo because I went against former President Jonathan.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“But I laughed because I am serving the living God and I am glad they brought a fake pastor as their candidate and we will flush them all out. So these threats have been there but my appeal is that if INEC is shifting the election, it should not be too far because we are eager to bury the PDP.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">“I am making this passionate appeal so that we can get this over. I am ready, my people are ready. Whatever is the decision, we shall abide by it because I also know that security issues are serious matters.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;">A statement by PDP candidate Osagie Ize-Iyamu’s campaign organisation accused the APC of stage managing the shift because it is afraid of defeat.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">According to Ize-Iyamu, he had a comfortable lead over the APC from a state-wide survey his team claimed to have conducted.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The statement said the survey, ”supervised by Dr. Ubani Azuka and released on Tuesday by the organisation, shows that the lead, which Obaseki had enjoyed in the Edo North—compared to the last survey, had hugely declined.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">“The report said the survey, which targeted 23,000 respondents and cut across the three senatorial districts, was carried out between August 1 and September 2, 2016.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“The latest report by the organisation, which targeted likely voters by telephone and online survey in the three senatorial districts: Edo South, Edo Central and Edo North, showed Ize-Iyamu to have the support of 75 per cent of the electorate in Edo South; 77 per cent in Edo Central, and 47 per cent in Edo North versus 25 per cent, 22 per cent and 53 per cent of the respondents, who said they supported Obaseki.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“The survey said that many of the respondents based their decision on the neglect of their communities, unfulfilled promises by the government, huge corruption within the state government, high cost of living, bad roads and abandoned projects in their areas.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Edo PDP also condemned the planned postponement as “ a despicable connivance” with the security agencies.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">A statement by Publicity Secretary Chris Nehikhare, said:</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“Edo PDP has condemned in very strong terms and brings to the attention of the general public, especially the good people of Edo State, a grand plan by APC to rig Edo elections through despicable connivance with security agencies whose questionable security report INEC has acted upon to postpone the elections.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“The security agencies in their report were talking about planned attacks on densely populated areas during the Sallah celebrations on September 12 &13 ;whereas Edo election is onSeptember 10.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“What APC and its leaders do not realise is that the liberation movement is beyond Ize-Iyamu and the PDP; it is a statewide consciousness; it is a defining idea and movement whose time has come, as the future is now.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
